For 40 years and more, Benny Gallagher has been writing, composing, arranging and performing timeless classics. Small wonder then that, with Graham Lyle, he was one of the first songwriters to be signed by Apple Publishing. Success as an artist quickly followed when the legendary McGuinness Flint stormed the charts with When I'm Dead And Gone and Malt and Barley Blues.

Then came seven more albums and world tours with the majestic Gallagher & Lyle - by which time Benny’s reputation was cemented as one of the UK’s foremost songwriters of his generation. Just a small smattering of those to have covered his songs are Art Garfunkel; Bryan Ferry; Colin Blunstone; Don Williams; Donovan Frankereiter; Elkie Brooks; Fairport Convention; Garth Brooks; Jim Capaldi; Joe Brown; Judith Durham; Little Anthony and the Imperials; Mary Hopkin; Phil Everly; Ricky Nelson; Ringo Starr; Rita Coolidge; Simon and Garfunkel; Status Quo;The Fureys & Davey Arthur; and LemonJelly....

We take to Cafe Culture again with an other show at The Coffee Shop in Strathpeffer (with Pedemont Blues Poet Malcolm Holcombe). We am looking for help to establish a regular open mic night at this beautifully intimate and friendly venue, if your interested in helping and/or playing let me know.
Again all live shows will be recorded for The Medicine Show www.themedicineshow.eu for later broadcast on Loch Broom FM, Nevis Radio, AF Collective Radio and UKCountryRadio.com and will be featured as video/podcast at Flyinshoes Review www.flyinshoesreview.eu.
No Comebacks Hogmanay Show at The Riverside now featured on FSR.

We are back on board for Belladrum Festival this year booking roots music across the stages and organising the popular Potting Shed Stage again, dates 5 6 August and tickets are on sale, last year the Festival sold out with 2 weeks to spare, so book your tickets well in advance www.tartanheartfestival.co.uk

Looking forward to seeing you at a medicine show soon, oh and has anyone got a set of wheel chains for a car? (I'm serious I don't want to miss a thing)

Sure. There are the inevitable comparisons to Tom Waits, but that's mostly due to Malcolm Holcombe's dark blue minstrelsy, delivered in a burned up voice and from a fate that'd have him be quiet. Certainly, both artists are poets, one quite famous, one not so much. But Holcombe is, if we can remove it from the parlance of down playing for the moment, what Waits will never be thanks to the homogenization of the big label / MTV / big box super store: a regional bard and hero.

Holcombe's very song-making essence is the soil, rock, river, tree, and mountain of Weaverville, North Carolina, a mountain town sitting in the shadow of Asheville, and surely influenced by the insurgent / revolutionary goings on at Black Mountain College, late by Holcombe's boyhood. And not unlike fellow North Carolinian and dark horse brother Tom House, Holcombe has carved out a voice of the place from whence he comes. A musical landscape where all themes lead to home. (In this same way, as his uniqueness is rooted and revealed through traditional structure, Holcombe is brothers in arms with a duo of Texas' best known troubled troubadours, Steve Earle and Townes Van Zandt, but his delivery is more akin in respects to that of Vic Chesnutt.)

All of which is a long way to say that Not Forgotten is glorious in its sublime earthiness. It rattles, moans, shivers and soothes. It is stories told in fragments of prose and poetry, accompanied by warm guitar, scratchy-scratchy vocals with stuttering pregnant pauses and line breaks in unusually effective and affecting places. Take the oddly named "Animated Sanctuary," for example, which is all at once tender, off kilter, and lovely. The title song, "Not Forgotten," decries the singer's protagonist as a mother or a father, but humbly and movingly makes mention of itself as "just a little one, not forgotten." Nature reigns supreme in imagery, from the multiple fertile references to gardens, seed, blooming flowers, birds, all breadcrumbs back to love, to brotherhood, and to the all important physical and esoteric home.

Monday 1st February Robby Hecht - Monday Night Medicine Show The Riverside Tavern Conon (by Dingwall) record for the Nevis Radio Medicine Show.

The music of Robby Hecht represents a return to the early 70s golden era of acoustic pop where thoughtful, well-crafted lyrics were blended with timeless melodies to impact mainstream music and culture. His debut album Late Last Night, produced by Lex Price (Mindy Smith) and mixed by Roger Moutenot (Yo La Tengo, Josh Rouse), was released in May of 2008 and features an impressive list of guest performers including Mindy Smith, Jeff Coffin, Thad Cockrell, Jill Andrews of The Everybodyfields, John Deaderick (Patty Griffin), Andrea Zonn (James Taylor) and more.

Raised in Knoxville, Tennessee, Robby first began writing and performing while attending The University of Wisconsin-Madison, developing and pairing his soulful voice and unique finger-style guitar. After spending time living in Paris and San Francisco including a period fronting the band AllDay Radio, he eventually returned to his home state, settling in Nashville.

A 2008 Kerrville New Folk Winner, Robby has played folk/roots festivals and venues across the country, sharing the stage with such legendary artists as Richie Havens, Greg Brown, and Patty Griffin, and garnering comparisons to early James Taylor, Paul Simon, and Amos Lee. Like these celebrated artists, Robby Hecht is a unique voice -- one that is stirring, instantly recognizable and truly original.

The Riverside Tavern Conon Bridge (Dingwall) as guests of Robby Hecht Feb 2nd http://houseconcerthub.ning.com/profiles/blogs/robby-hecht-monday-night
Loch Broom FM Medicine Show live session 7pm February 2nd
The Argyll Hotel Ullapool Argyll Street Ullapool Ross-shire Scotland IV26 2UB 9pm (entry by donation)

A. J.'s (House Concert Hub site) relentless touring schedule since the US release of 'Dogwood Winter' – at times playing as many as 260 dates per year -- has paid off. In May of 2004, he was the winner in the general category of the coveted Chris Austin Songwriting award at MerleFest, placing him in the company of such seasoned veteran artists as Gillian Welch and up-and-comers like Tift Merritt and Adrienne Young.

In October of 2006 'Revelation' was released on the Lucky Dice label in Europe. The release was paired with a near sold-out 24-date tour, and followed by a 31-date tour five months later. Both the record and the tours were met with rave reviews from fellow artists, critics and fans alike.

While both 'Dogwood Winter' and 'Revelation' are stunning achievements, nothing compares to hearing and seeing A. J. in a live setting. His performances are so powerful, that it is commonplace for audience members to be moved to tears. As a master storyteller, A. J.'s dry and cutting wit between songs has become nearly as celebrated as his performances and the songs themselves. The Glasgow Herald had this to say about one of Roach's recent performances: "Roach took the audience packed into the estimable Fallen Angels Club, on a backwoods travelogue that was virtually a masterclass in illustrating how much sophistication goes into creating so-called primitive music."

It’s exactly this sort of openness to the people and places that pass through her life, and to the opportunities that might emerge in every new and particular circumstance, that grew to become the central theme of her brilliant new album “The Jeopardy of Circumstance”. The album features two other stalwarts of the Austin scene, her best friend Danny Schmidt and long-time friend and colleague Colin Brooks of The Band of Heathens. While already making quite a buzz around the Austin scene with her highly spirited and spontaneous performances, Elkin spends the majority of her time on the road still, touring nationally and in the UK and Europe.

DANNY SCHMIDT: Austin, TX-based singer/songwriter, Danny Schmidt www.dannyschmidt.com has been building an enthusiastic (nearly cult-like) following while simultaneously inspiring the admiration of his fellow artists and critical acclaim from industry professionals. He is an authentic timeless troubadour in the tradition of Townes Van Zandt, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen and Dave Carter, who delivers his craft with a quiet power, a level of complexity and an underlying humanity that is truly rare in this age of sound bite marketeering. It's his songwriting which won him the prestigous Kerrville New Folk award, but it's his intense live performances that leave listeners with a sense that each of his songs is necessary, plain and simple. His guitar work is effortless and sparkling, his arrangements are fresh and unpredictable, his voice ageless. Stylistically and musically, Danny’s writing spans an impressively diverse reach, from deeply-rooted Appalachian mountain gospel to haunted English balladry, from syncopated Piedmont country blues to vagabond 60’s protest folk-stumpery. He tackles universal themes of love, loss and longing . . . restless discontent and grateful joy. And he captures both the sorrow and the beauty inherent in our everyday lives with the wisdom of a perceptive, compassionate elder and with the innocent awe and tenderness of a child.

In the words of Sing Out Magazine: "He is perhaps the best new songwriter we've heard in the last 15 years." Here are some of the reviews.
"Rosenthal can draw you into his lyrics much the same way that James Taylor and Don Henley can".
"Take Jackson Brownes personal confessions and wrap them in Kris Kristofferson’s world weary tales of broken relationships and you have an idea of what to expect from Tokyo Rosenthal."
"This is Americana with real teeth in the lyrics"

In a world made small by airplanes and email, Vanessa Peters is at home everywhere she goes - an essential trait for a wandering gypsy songwriter. Vanessa Peter's music reflects the influences of growing up in Texas as much as it reflects how her music has matured out on the road. Voted as one of the top 10 folk artists in Austin a few years ago, Vanessa then packed her things, took her show on the road, and hasn’t looked back since. In the last three years, she has released three albums and played over 250 shows in 10 countries. Together with Manuel Schicchi (lead guitar and harmonies), Vanessa has toured throughout the US and performed at some of the best venues in Europe: Folk Club in Torino (IT), Roepean in Ottersum (NL), Mono in Oslo, and Electro-Acoustic in London.

This past summer, the band got another surge of interest when Vanessa and Manuel entered Aimee Mann’s video contest for her hit single, “Freeway.” They placed as runners-up in the contest and overnight their video went from 3,000 hits to 30,000 – it’s now over 100,000! Aimee even singled out their video as one of her favorites when she announced the winners.

Their newest record, “Sweetheart, Keep Your Chin Up,” is co-produced with Salim Nourallah (The Old ‘97s) and expands on the sound they have become known for:a blend of rootsy pop jangle and country noir. Like its predecessor “Little Films,” “Sweetheart, Keep Your Chin Up” is something of a concept album, taking fairy tales and myths and putting a modern spin on them, giving voice to such characters as Odysseus, Penelope, The Sirens, the Wicked Witch of the West, and others.

Their 2009 touring will take them across America and Canada and back to Europe as well, where they will focus on Italy, the Benelux, Germany, Scandinavia, and the UK.

MEDICINE in the modern sense is perceived to be a treatment for ailment, but in the ancient sense particularly in the minds of Native Americans, medicine is all that is good in nature connecting the spirit world with the physical. The Medicine of music can be a direct connection with all it is to be human and also our best prescription for the disconnecting-ailments of our modern culture"

Belladrum Festival and Tartan Heart Fringe The Best Possible Two Weeks to be in The Highlands

Medicine Music book the roots acts across all stages at Belladrum Festival and organise the potting shed stage and the belladrum fringe, and organise the radio support for the event.
We extend congratulations to all who work on the festival and to our friends and coleges who help to put the Fringe and Potting Shed Stage together.
The Tartan Heart Fringe sets the mood in the run up to Belladrum Festival August 7 8 2009 and features not only the best of Highland talent but artists from around the world too, from July 24th - August 8th and offers a highland trail for the intrepid musical explorer around some of the musical hotspots of one of the world historically musical sensitive lands

Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival has been nominated in four categories of the national UK Festival Awards 2009 : Family Festival Award, The Grass Roots Festival Award (thanks to your votes, Bella won this last year): Best Medium Sized Festival; and Best Toilets! In addition, Lau have been nominated for the Virtual Festivals Critics Choice Award for their performance at Bella. To vote for Bella and Lau, go to www.festivalawards.com and register your votes in as many categories as you like - though we'd recommend the FAMILY FESTIVAL AWARD as the one we'd really like to win this year. The deadline for voting us onto the shortlist is 14th October. Then a second round of public voting which is your chance to vote us into the winning position ends on 4th November. Winners are announced on 19th November.

By voting you could win a pair of tickets to any of the winning festivals in this year's awards!

BELLA NOMINATED FOR THE FAMILY FESTIVAL AWARD

Every year, there seem to be more and more children at festivals, with increasingly impressive areas and facilities for kids reflecting the rise. Games, workshops, kid zones and activities for youngsters all combine to make their weekend a memorable one - and often a much easier one for their mums and dads. Which festival was the most enjoyable for kids and parents this year? THIS HAS TO BE BELLA - SCOTLAND'S ONLY REAL FAMILY FESTIVAL!

...AND THE GRASS ROOTS FESTIVAL AWARD

Often the best small festivals spring from an organic labour of love and a long-time dream which has been shared by thousands more. These festivals should be celebrated, not just for the courage and vision shown by their organisers, but also because they never forget where they've come from, supporting their local communities and new music along the way whilst retaining an independent spirit and resisting commercial saturation. HELP US WIN THIS AGAIN!

...AND BEST MEDIUM SIZED FESTIVAL

Festivals nominated for this award generally started life much smaller, but have evolved upwards from their original roots due to their popularity and success in filling a growing niche.

With a unique identity, following, and intimacy, many outdoor music fans think middle-capacity festivals get the perfect blend of atmosphere and scale.

But which one did the business this year? VOTE FOR BELLA!

... AND BEST TOILET

Whether it’s the pongy portaloos, the lingering longdrops or the unpleasant urinals, all festival toilets tang, but some stink more than others. But which festival boasted the cleanest cans and the best ratio of toilets to person? THEY WERE CLEANER THAN EVER AT BELLA!

...AND LAU FOR THE VIRTUAL FESTIVALS CRITICS' CHOICE AWARD

Lau have been nominated for this award for their performance at Bella' 09. The award is designed to celebrate those special acts who added something a little extra to their festival show. It could be comedy, nostalgia, crowd interaction or just that 'secret ingredient' - basically something that sets them apart from other performers as a real crowd pleaser.

Don't bogard this news my friend, pass it on

(Her father Phil Rosenthal is a bluegrass musician and runs a small, home record label, American Melody.) She has released a new album this year, called Gentle As The Sun, to wide spread aclaim and universal glowing reviews, recorded in Nashville, produced by Jim Rooney (John Prine, Iris Dement)

Its been one of the Medicine Show albums of this year.

Instigate Debate (and have a gig in your home)

This is a wonderfull Idea www.instigatedebate.com, Instigate Debate - Get involved and get a free gig - at your place.

Instigate Debate is an experiment. An avenue for exchange between the public and public figures, without the hindrance - or safety net - of media spin.

It's simple. If you have a mobile phone, it most likely has a camera.

Whoever you are, wherever you are, if you spot a public figure, any of the wonderful people who regularly appear in our fantastic magazines, newspapers or even on our tellies, try not to gush, or faint. Instead, ask them a question, and film the response. There is a list of suggested questions on www.instigatedebate.com. What do you want to know? How can we find out?

Instigate Debate make a promise to everyone who submits a video - a group of some of the UK's best musicians - Jon McClure, Tom Clarke (The Enemy), Carl Barat (Dirty Pretty Things), Drew McConnell (Babyshambles) and other friends - will play a set in your living room, what the hell, your garden, for you and your friends. They will do as many of these gigs as humanly possible. No matter where you are in the UK, they will come to you.

Submit your video at www.instigatedebate.com, include your contact details, and we'll get in touch asap to book a time for the gig. They want to get this - and the debate - moving NOW.

A few tips to get you started:

Be polite, don't get in their faces. This isn't a stitch-up, and they shouldn't feel that it is. Tell them you're from Instigatedebate.com, and want to get their views on an issue.
